Community Sports Across the Upper Midwest

Seasonal Sports in small towns across the Iron Range of Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Welcome to Madcow Sports

A group of community leagues founded to bring sports to small town communities across the Upper Midwest. Our main goal is to put the community back in community sports.

Community Sports Leagues

We have been focusing on community sports since the 1950's, when our first league was founded in the Iron Range of Minnesota.
We then added townball (baseball) in the 60's.

Then in 2009 we broadened our reach creating Madcow Sports and including small towns across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Now, we have year-round seasonal sports in both the UP and the Iron Range.

Community Sports Leagues

Connecting athletes across the Upper Midwest through hockey, baseball, and soccer leagues for all ages.

Hockey

Ice Hockey has been a part of the life blood of the Iron Range. That love for the game has spread to the entire state of Minnesota. Small rinks across the state is where so many youth honed their hockey skills.
Since 1955 the Iron Range Hockey Association has been committed to keeping the tradition of small town hockey on the Iron Range and the Northwoods of Minnesota.
In 2009 in coordination with Madcow Sports we expanded to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan creating the Yooper Hockey League. Each March the champions of each league square off in Duluth for the Iron-Yooper Cup.

Baseball

Town Ball has been popular throughout Minnesota since the 1920s. When it started fading after World War II some communities united to form new leagues. Iron Range Baseball was born out of this and has been playing town club ball since 1962.
In 2010, The Yooper League was created out of the same mind set. To bring town ball back to the community.
Unfortunately, due to several issues during 2020 and 2021 the Iron League was forced to halt it's operations. Many of the assets were sent over to the Yooper League.
We hope that the Iron League can return in the future.

Since the World Cup was last played in the United States back in 1994, the world's game has taken over America. With the announcing of the World Cup coming back to America in 2026 there is an even bigger fan base than ever before.
This excitement is carrying over to the small communities of the Midwest as well. There were some challenges in 2020 when the leagues were going to start up and it never fully emerged.
In 2023 though the Upper Peninsula Soccer Association began. We are looking forward to an exciting third season in 2025. Look for us to start back up in October 2025.
